Do You Have Impacted Wisdom Teeth? 3 Warning Signs to Look For

Teenagers and young adults often undergo wisdom tooth extractions. Why is this procedure so common? Simply because these third molars, which are located at the very back of the mouth, are known to cause some serious oral health complications. They can be especially dangerous if they are impacted (stuck fully or partially beneath the gumline).  How can you tell if you have impacted wisdom teeth? This blog post explains three signs that you should look out for.

You Can Only See/Feel Part of Your Wisdom Teeth

In an ideal situation, a wisdom tooth rises fully into place and lines up with the rest of your smile. For many people, there is not enough room in their mouth for that to happen. Therefore, the tooth may emerge only partway from the gumline. You might notice a rough edge, a small white corner, or a tooth that seems trapped below the surface. Even if it does not hurt right away, a partially visible wisdom tooth can create places where food and bacteria collect. That makes the area harder to keep clean and easier to irritate.

You Are Experiencing Pain and Discomfort

You may also have an impacted wisdom tooth even if you cannot see it. When a tooth stays entirely below the gums or develops at the wrong angle, it can place pressure on the teeth next to it and strain the jaw. You may feel soreness near the back of your mouth, tenderness along the gums, or aching that spreads into your jaw. Some people notice swelling, redness, or discomfort when they chew. You may even find it harder to open your mouth all the way. These symptoms can range from mild to intense, but they all deserve attention.

You Have Symptoms of Decay or Infection

Partially impacted wisdom teeth often trap food particles around them. That can raise your risk of tooth decay, gum irritation, and infection. Warning signs may include bad breath that does not go away, a bad taste in your mouth, swelling near the back teeth, or sharp sensitivity when you eat or drink. In some cases, you may also notice a small bump or cyst near the area. These problems can affect both the wisdom teeth and the teeth next to them.

Find Out for Sure if You Have Impacted Wisdom Teeth

The only way to know for sure whether your wisdom teeth are impacted is to visit your dentist for an exam and X-rays. After a thorough examination, your care provider can determine if your third molars present a current or potential future threat to your oral health. If you are currently experiencing painful symptoms around the wisdom teeth, it is unlikely that you will need to have them removed. Then, you can look forward to a healthier smile that is at a lower risk of complications.
