Lumineers Vs. Veneers Vs. Dental Bonding

Lumineers, veneers, and dental bonding all serve the same basic purpose. Their job is to cover the outward-facing surface of the teeth in order to hide imperfections, such as chips, cracks, small gaps, discoloration, and more. However, there are some key differences between them:

  • Dental bonding uses tooth-colored resin to cover teeth. The process takes just one appointment and is surprisingly affordable. However, the results are less durable than what you would expect from other treatments.
  • Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain, custom-made in a dental lab, that we attach to the teeth. In order for them to look good and adhere properly to the teeth, a small sliver of dental enamel must be removed.
  • Lumineers are a special brand-name veneer made out of Cerinate porcelain, which can still be quite strong even when it is extremely thin. In fact, Lumineers are often as thin as a contact lens. They are sometimes called “no-prep veneers” because, due to their ultra-thin nature, they require little to no removal of tooth enamel.

The Process of Getting Lumineers

The Lumineers process usually takes two dental appointments. During your first visit, we will verify that you are a good candidate for veneers and then take impressions of your teeth. A dental lab will fabricate your veneers according to detailed instructions from our team. Their size, shape, and color should all complement your natural features and be in-line with your vision for your smile.

Once the Lumineers are ready, we will use a special adhesive agent to bond them onto your teeth. Then, you can start to enjoy all the benefits of your new look!

Benefits of Lumineers

Lumineers offer some truly outstanding benefits:

  • They can be temporary if you wish. Although Lumineers can last for a decade or longer, the process is reversible if you ever change your mind.
  • They are minimally invasive. Minimal tooth preparation makes for an easy, comfortable treatment process.
  • Natural appearance. Cerinate porcelain looks incredibly lifelike.
  • Stain resistance. Pigments tend to slide right off porcelain, so you can expect your Lumineers to maintain their original color for a long time.
  • Lumineers can address a range of aesthetic imperfections, and their appearance can be customized to your specifications.
