Why Your Clear Aligners Are Turning Yellow and What to Do About It

Clear aligners like CandidPro are a popular alternative to traditional braces because they’re nearly invisible, removable, and more comfortable. However, many users notice over time that their once-clear trays start to turn yellow or become discolored. This not only affects the appearance of your smile during treatment but may also indicate improper care. If your aligners are looking less than fresh, here’s why it’s happening and how to fix it.

Why Are Your Aligners Turning Yellow?

Several common factors can cause your clear aligners to discolor.

Poor Cleaning Habits

Failing to clean your aligners regularly or properly is the most common cause of yellowing. Bacteria, plaque, and leftover food particles can accumulate on the trays, leading to a cloudy or yellow appearance over time.

Drinking Staining Beverages

Drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, soda, and even some juices can stain your aligners, especially if consumed while wearing them. Even though you’re supposed to remove them before drinking anything but water, it’s easy to forget, leading to stubborn discoloration.

Smoking or Vaping

Tobacco products, including vaping devices, can cause yellow or brown stains on your aligners just as they do on your teeth. Nicotine and tar are quick to discolor anything they touch.

Improper Storage

Leaving your aligners exposed to air or in an unclean case can promote bacterial growth and staining. Always store them in their designated case when not in use.

Extended Use Beyond Schedule

Each aligner is designed to be worn for about one to two weeks. If you wear them longer than recommended, they may become discolored due to prolonged exposure to bacteria, saliva, and food particles.

How to Prevent and Remove Yellowing

While you can’t reverse severe staining, there are steps you can take to clean mildly discolored trays and prevent future yellowing.

Clean Aligners Twice Daily

Just like your teeth, your aligners need daily cleaning. Use a soft toothbrush (not the one you use for your teeth) and clear, unscented liquid soap to gently scrub them. Avoid using toothpaste, which can be abrasive and scratch the plastic, making it more prone to staining.

Use Cleaning Crystals or Tablets

Products like cleaning crystals or retainer cleaning tablets can help remove plaque and mild stains. Soak your trays in the solution for 15 to 20 minutes daily or as directed.

Rinse Often

Rinse your aligners with water every time you take them out and before putting them back in. This prevents saliva and food particles from drying and clinging to the plastic.

Stick to Water

Drink only water while wearing your aligners. For anything else, remove your trays first, then brush your teeth before putting them back in.

Replace Aligners as Scheduled

Don’t try to extend the use of a single set of aligners. Follow your orthodontist’s schedule for switching to a new set to avoid unnecessary discoloration.

Yellow aligners may be a sign that it’s time to improve your cleaning routine or be more mindful about what you’re eating and drinking. With proper care, you can keep your trays clean, clear, and as invisible as intended. A little daily effort goes a long way toward preserving your smile, both now and after your treatment is complete.
